The Neo Geo Pocket was SNK’s first handheld. It launched in Japan on October 28, 1998 with a monochrome screen and sat beside Nintendo’s Game Boy. The Neo Geo Pocket Color replaced it on March 19, 1999 in Japan, then reached North America on August 6, 1999 and Europe on October 1, 1999. The Color kept backward compatibility with the nine monochrome games. A Toshiba TLCS-900/H ran the show; a Z80 handled sound. The microswitched thumb stick clicked through eight directions more precisely than a typical D-pad. Two action buttons, a rear cartridge slot, and a horizontal grip made it feel closer to a Game Gear than a Game Boy. A slimmer New Neo Geo Pocket Color arrived in Japan that October.
The library is small and concentrated. SNK brought The King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, and Metal Slug: 1st Mission / 2nd Mission. Sega added Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure. The Capcom crossovers SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters’ Clash and SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium are the games people still name first. A link cable tied some titles to the Dreamcast. About 73 Color games shipped before the line died.
SNK sold tens of thousands of Color units in Japan and more than 100,000 in Europe by the end of 1999. North America never rose much above a 2% handheld share. Aruze bought SNK, shut Western operations on June 13, 2000, and SNK itself went bankrupt on October 30, 2001. The Pocket line ended there. It never beat the Game Boy Color, but the stick, the battery life, and that short SNK-and-friends list still make it the handheld people hunt for.
